Take someone that’s poor, down and out, that spots a $100 bill laying on the sidewalk. It is good luck for them. Now consider that same person stranded on an island by him/herself with no way to get off. Finding a $100 bill doesn’t have much meaning since it won’t help in their current situation. It won’t necessarily mean good luck since it’s pretty meaningless in such situation.
And so it goes. Good luck is sometimes hard to define. What is considered good luck for one person may not mean good luck to another.

Take an extreme example of a little girl who loves cats, black cats in particular. She always wanted a cat, a black cat, but never had one. One day she spotted a lovely black cat just across the narrow dirt road. There was an old ladder leaning against a deserted barn near the cat. No one lived there, so she ran over there to get a closer look at the cat. The cat saw her coming close and quickly walked under the ladder, then turned around and strolled up to the little girl. The cat rubbed against the little girls legs. Right then and there she fell in love with the cat.
Good Luck - Can we measure it?
The little girl had always been told that a black cat walking under a ladder meant bad luck. She didn’t care, she wanted that cat. Then she noticed a collar on the cat with a note attached to it. She reached down and read it. It said “Take me home I am the cat you always wanted.” Well, bad luck had no meaning to the little girl. It was very good luck to her. She took it home, showed it to her mother along with the note and her mother, shocked in disbelief, gave in and admitted it was such good luck to have found the black her daughter always wanted.
